Wideband, display & locking controllers

The last items to locate before completing the remainder of the wiring was the controllers for the wideband oxygen sensor, multi-gauge digital display & central locking.

The wideband controller is a PLX Devices (Gen 2) kit which I've had sitting in a box for years, and includes a Bosch LSU wideband sensor with the kit.

The multi-gauge display is a budget-friendly version of the Defi ADVANCE ZD from Just Race Parts here in Australia and will be used to display a range of temperatures and pressures via the sensors supplied with the kit.

The central locking controller was a generic controller purchased locally.

The controllers and associated sensor/power wiring is bulky and my original plan to mount them behind the main dash panel wasn't going to work due to the limited room. I ended up deciding to mount the wideband and display controllers underneath the drivers seat which provides more than enough room to roll up and secure any excess wiring lengths. If there was an issue with the controllers or wiring, I would have to remove the seat to access it but that's an easy job.

The controllers are mounted to a 1.5mm steel plate, and the plate bolted to some threaded standoffs (welded to the floorpan) with grommets for isolating vibrations. The digital display controller is mounted with has four small screws but I had a friend 3D print a saddle clamp for the wideband controller.

Some of the sensors had to have bungs welded on :

Inlet air temperature - in the inlet piping piping just prior to the throttle body

Exhaust Gas Temperature - just below the turbo outlet in the dump pipe
Wideband Oxygen Sensor - in the lower exhaust section at the rear of the engine

Other sensors were fitted to ports that were already available :

Coolant temperature - in the inlet to the block from the radiator. This port was used for HVAC system in the Toyota Starlet and I just needed a 3/8" to 1/8" adapter to be able fit the new sensor.

Oil pressure and temperature - in the remote oil filter ports

All sensor wiring will be routed under the centre console and up into the dash area, then through a dedicated grommet in the firewall. It will be wrapped separately to the Toyota Starlet wiring looms in case I need to replace a single sensor wire.

The central locking controller was mounted under the centre console. I made a U-shaped bracket and welded it to the floor to act as a mount for the centre console, and the controller was bolted to that bracket - with two overlapping saddle brackets to hold it in place above the gear shifter cables.
