The position of the Mini radiator has been used to mount the air filter box and I had originally trimmed the radiator slots to clear the subframe and welded on a small diameter piece of wire to provide support for the remaining area.
There is no need to keep the remaining radiator slots and the airbox does not completely cover the slots and being concerned about any water, stones etc entering the engine bay area I decided to cut out the remaining slots and weld in a solid sheet panel.
The new panel required a bend in it and I used the 50mm overhang on my workbench to clamp the steel sheet and gently hammer the necessary bend in it. The bench overhang was designed specifically for tasks like this.

Once the vertical panel was cut to shape tack welded in, a few additional pieces were welded in just above the subframe spar to follow the shape of the subframe tube. The pieces have only been tack welded so far and full welding will be completed later.

I drilled the airbox mounting holes and installed some rivnuts for the airbox. The airbox is mounted via four M6 bolts through the back of the box into the new steel panel.
