Workshop work begins

So it has been a long time since the blog has been updated and it has been due to the owner-builder renovation, construction and landscaping work I've been extremely busy with at my property for the over 2 1/2 years. A large majority of that work has been completed and my workshop has recently been (mostly) cleared of various house items so I've finally been able to direct my attention to setting up my garage/workshop area.

Firstly, I decided to insulate the Northern wall of the workshop. In Australia the northern facing wall of any structure receives the most direct sunlight in summer and after we had a couple of recent hot days, I realised how much radiant heat would be transmitted from that wall - which just happens to be the wall which the main workbench will be mounted up against. I had some sheets of Foilboard cavity wall insulation (rigid foil faced foam board) from a granny flat I completed earlier this year and it was perfect for what I required.

I purchased some lengths of steel ceiling battens and welded them in place between the shed girts on the northern wall, trimmed the 15mm thick Foilboard to size and mounted the pieces around the battens (the sheets were mounted so there was a 15mm air gap between the wall sheets and foilboard panels to improve R-rating of the insulation). I cut sheets of 6mm thick oriented strand board (OSB) / braceboard as the lining over the top of the Foilboard and the OSB sheets were screwed into the ceiling battens.

The OSB was painted with two coats of polyurethane paint to seal and protect the timber (and I wanted to maintain the raw timber look). When the slab was first painted a couple of year ago, an overnight drizzle damaged some of the paint surface (see the discolouration in the photo below) in the RHS of the slab so I also repainted that half of the slab with an industrial epoxy paint which is resistant to oils, acids etc etc
I've also started running the power & lighting wiring and installing GPO mounting blocks around the perimeter of the workshop. I will have have an abundance of power outlets around the perimeter of the workshop with two 15A pendant outlets in the central area of the workshop for my MIG welder.
