While I had the seats bolted in the shell, I found a comfortable position for the gear lever and marked it's position. Luckily it was forward far enough while still being comfortable AND clearing the standard handbrake position so I won't have move the handbrake mount and lever.

When I dismantled the Starlet front cut, I cut off the pressed steel gear lever mount and have used it in the Mini. I simply cut off the front and rear part of the factory mount and welded them in place in the Mini.

In the rusted out front cut / shell I have I mock mounted the gear lever in the same position as the good shell and cut out a big hole in the firewall to get the cables through.

I then fitted the clutch and brake pedals so that I could figure out where the best route for the cables would be while 1) not interfering with the pedals, 2) sitting against the floor to go under the heater and 3) not be curved so tight that the cables may bind up and be hard to change gears.

At some point I will have to find how to have the cables feed through the firewall and still have it watertight and a standard grommet may or may be up to the job since the cables go through the firewall at an angle.
