I found a box of parts that I have stripped off the Minis on a shelf in the garage last week and was motivated to get them sandblasted and then passivated. I rummaged up as many parts as I could find for my second drop to the local coating place http://www.zinccoaters.com.au/
My friend who normally does all the blasting for me was sick, so he let me use his blasting cabinet for around 5 hours to blast all the parts I wanted. I must admit the world of media blasting is very satisfying - to see the end result with no paint and raw material.
I enamel painted some of the parts I blasted but this is how everything came back from the gold passivating - bonnet & boot latches, pedal box parts, hinges, shock absorber mounts, and various steering column and engine bay parts.
When I dropped the parts off to the coaters, the guy asked whether there was any aluminium amongst the parts. Naturally I said "No" because I am aware that the chemical process eats away an any aluminium. Little did I know that the boot hinges were alloy and this was the result with a good amount material etched away! It's a good thing new hinges are readily available.
