How to replace a few other misc seals

Here's just a few quick notes on how to replace some of the miscellaneous seals on the 4E engines.

To replace the CV/Driveshaft output seals in the differential, use a seal puller to lever out the seals and you should be able to press in the new seals by hand. If not, gently tap the seal into it's recess, ensuring that it's pretty level as it goes in. Note that the seals on either side the different sizes.

To replace the seals in the valve cover, you can also use the seal puller to pull out all 4 seals and insert new ones. Once again, make sure the seals are level are they are inserted. If you are careful (not to damage the rubber), you can use a drift punch and make you way around the seal, tapping gently as you go.

To replace the (exhaust) camshaft seal, the camshaft pulley has to be remove first (The valve cover doesn't need to be removed for this task - even though mine was). Take a note of the location of the "4E" marking on the pulley - it will be at the top. Use a spanner to hold the camshaft in place while using a breaker bar to undo the pulley bolt. The camshaft can be moved a little at this point but don't worry too much because the pulley fits over a key on the end of the camshaft in one of two locations and the positions are quite different.
Wiggle the pulley off and undo the camshaft cap bolts. Use a screwdriver and hammer to gently tap the cap off (it won't take a lot of effort) and remove the seal by hand.

Slip the new seal over the end of the camshaft, put some gasket maker over the grooves (after cleaning out the grooves of old sealer) in the bottom of the cap and place cap over the new seal.

Tighten the two cap bolts to 13Nm, replace the pulley in it's correct position (with the embossed "4E" at the top) and tighten the pulley bolt to 51Nm (using spanner to hold camshaft in place, and torque wrench to tighten).
If you have taken off the valve cover, then you might as well take the short time to replace the sealer on the inlet cam - on the gearbox side of the engine. It's a small 1/2 circle that sits under the valve cover seal next to the distributor cap. Clean out the grooves of old sealer, put some new gasket maker over the grooves and press back into place.

  1. I need new oil seals for both camshafts! Do you know where I can find some? I live in the U.S. and finding parts for this engine is tough! Please help!

    1. Tony, The camshaft seals came in a kit directly from Toyota so you should be able to source some directly from a Toyota dealer. Good luck
