I had 10 spare minutes before dinner tonight and with the help of my wife (on the odd occasion that she helps me out in the garage), I removed the flywheel. I screwed in a bolt (that held the gearbox/bell housing on) and jammed a large screwdriver in the flywheel ring gear and against the bolt to stop the flywheel from moving. My wife used a breaker bar to then undo the nuts.

I used the same technique for undoing the crankshaft pullet bolt on the other side of the engine too (jam screwdriver in ring gear and use breaker bar to undo the bolt).
