I had initially wanted a Clubman panel van. I knew they were not common but after over last 8 months of searching, I found that the ones in reasonably good condition were going for prices I couldn’t justify. The cheap ones were full of rust. Early this month, the project car was purchased from a young guy in Bunbury, WA (Hi Ben if you’re reading this!). He had aspirations to do a rebuild of the Mini and a possible Honda VTEC engine conversion but for various reasons it was not to be.
For the princely sum of $1000 (same as what the front Metro brakes cost!), I had a rolling shell with engine intact, but not much else was intact. The entire interior, panels, glass & most of the wiring had been removed so I picked up the shell and two huge boxes of miscellanous parts. Luckily many of the parts will not be needed due to the engine conversion. The shell was in pretty good condition with small areas of visible rust in the sills, drivers footwell and rear bumper. Anybody who has restored a Mini will know that you just don’t know how bad it is until it’s all sandblasted.
After a 6 hour road trip to pick up the Mini, it has now stashed away in a mate’s garage until I finish building my new house late this year and get it moved there. Not much will be happening until then (and later)
